Spring Morning春晓

By Meng Haoran (孟浩然)

春眠不觉晓,

处处闻啼鸟。

夜来风雨声,

花落知多少。

Slumbering in spring, unwarned of the dawn,

From every corner echoes the song of waking birds.

During the night came sounds of wind and rain;

Who knows how many blossoms have fallen to the earth?

Cultural Context & Zen Lore

Meng Haoran (689–740) was a leading master of nature and landscape poetry. Rather than lamenting the storm, the poem captures a tender, empathetic wonder at nature’s cycles—cherishing the beauty of spring precisely because it is fleeting.
